Coasting the Baseline

Coasting the Base Line is a non-profit educational project created by sculptor David Barr and coordinated by the Michigan Legacy Art Park (MLAP), A thirty-acre non-profit wilderness sculpture park near Thompsonville, Michigan. MLAP is dedicated to interdisciplinary learning through hands-on, project-based inquiry in an engaging environment.

The sculptural aspect of Coasting the Base Line comprises a series of granite obelisks situated along Michigan’s Base Line (Eight Mile Road in some places), which runs from the coast of Lake St. Clair to the coast of Lake Michigan. The first obelisk was erected on December 14, 2003, in Northville, Michigan. Each obelisk will offer a community – especially young people – opportunities to research how survey technology shaped our geographical, social, and economic landscapes; and to connect with communities across the base line.
